What are the varying Degrees of Independence achieved in Autism?
Now that there is a lot of awareness of Autism, people with Autism can make friends, attend college, get married, become a parent, or have a satisfying career. Their path of progress is just different.
Both the family and the patient must understand that it’s impossible to provide a concrete answer to how long it will take to develop certain independent living skills. At Dr Saxena’s clinic, our friendly staff will meet each client and works closely with them to develop skills to keep them safe and happy.
Below are the independent living skills that are developed over time by an Autistic person:
Self-help and determination skills.
An autistic person is trained to help themselves. They are trained to be aware of themselves emotionally, physically, and cognitively to create and attain their goals. We first note down their strengths and weaknesses, which are integral to their development and ability to live independently.
Functional communication
Communication is an integral part of independent life. So we teach them to recognize and express desires, feelings, and concerns to those they live or interact with. They will be able to communicate with their family, friends, colleagues and employees.
Domestic and personal care.
We will also teach them to be able to live independently and perform personal and home-related tasks such as:
- Dressing and undressing
- Choosing clothes for weather and event
- Personal hygiene practices, including brushing hair, shaving, applying makeup, showering, menstrual care, etc.
- Washing clothes
- Planning and preparing meals
- Housekeeping
- Yard care
Because limited personal care practices can lead to job exclusion or the feeling of being unaccepted by peers, individuals with ASD must receive tools they can use to perform these daily tasks.
Career path and employment.
We also train individuals to learn skills that help them find and keep a job. Our aim is not just to make them do their daily chores but also to bring out their potential to become financially independent. By training them in communication abilities, self-care practices, and emotional regulation techniques, individuals with ASD succeed in their chosen career fields.
Money management.
Individuals with ASD must be able to manage a bank account, use credit and debit cards, and balance a chequebook. You must train the child at home regarding rent, groceries, medicine, personal items, and other expenses. Make them practise this at home so that if they move out of the house, they will be able to do these things by themselves.
There are many individuals with Autism who have created wonders in their lifetime. Autism, in no way, should be a limiting factor. Please visit our website https://www.drsaxenaclinic.com/ for more information, or contact us at 040-23428989 for appointments and consultations.
